Photos from Istanbul

Hans and I lived in Istanbul from 2002 through 2008. Initially we stayed in Sariyer, then we had a flat in Çarşamba, a conservative section of Fatih, Istanbul. In 2003 we moved from Çarşamba out to Emirli, a small village near Kurtkoy and Pendik, but still considered Istanbul. Though it took about an hour to drive from Emirli to Istanbul proper.

These photos are from our first winter there in 2003. I didn't see this much snow during our time in Germany!

 

Above is our Skoda car stuck in the snow at the bottom of the hill from our house. The neighbors tried to help us get it out, but we had to wait 2 days for the thaw and then were able to drive it.

 

And then came summer! We used to swim every day and have our breakfast on the upper floor patio.

We had a huge wood burning stove under the staircase for heating throughout the house so we drove out to Sultanbeyli to buy wood. They would have you drive your car onto a scale and weigh it. Then they would fill the trunk with wood and weigh the car once more. They charged by weight.

  While working on assembling a photo carousel to advertise my latest harem pants project, I needed to search the internet for an app or software to create mp4s. Also, recently, in order to update my old bellydancermarta.com site, I needed to take a course in HTML5 because the last time I worked on the site was in HTML3 and a LOT of things have changed. In the 8 years I worked for the State of California, I did not keep up my skills in web development. I thought I could just go back and pick up where I left off when I retired. LOL What an optimist. I have realized that I am becoming a dinosaur. I started reflecting on where my work is now. My book (Anmutig und fit durch Bauchtanz) is now sold second-hand on eBay and referred to as 'vintage.' How my dance career went from hobby to pro

The other night my husband and I were dining with friends when one asked me how I got to be a professional belly dancer. I thought back, and without immense detail, just went through the chronological steps. So I'm listing them off here so that later I have a guide to fill in the relevant details. 1975 - I was working in the law firm in San Mateo and a co-worker suggested I go with her to take belly dance lessons. I had been taking tap and jazz and couldn't really relate to what belly dance is. She talked me into it and I found it lots of fun. I took classes and workshops with several different instructors. 1977 - Now married and living in Wiesbaden, Germany, I had been moping around for six months, depressed, after my mother died. I was listening to the AFRTS (Armed Forces Radio) and there was an announcement that the Air Base in Wiesbaden was looking for teachers for classes for the military wives. American Fiction - see the movie!

Yesterday I saw the film American Fiction. Great film, great actors, and a message we need to hear, repeatedly. When we got home, I looked up the song Stagger Lee from Lloyd Price from 1959, which in turn made me look up the story behind the song. First the song. Here is a link to the original version that I remember as a kid: But while searching, I discovered that Dick Clark thought the lyrics were too violent for his American Bandstand show and had Price rewrite them to tone it down for performance on the show, with a happy ending.  History of Stagger Lee 1950 – 1960 .
